Teachers You should have before graduating Neumont

Posted on February 27, 2008 - Filed Under Neumont

These are the teachers thats I think are of Neumonts best, so in no particular order here they are and why.

Paul Coleman.  He teaches Java 3 and software architectures.  He also has taught some other classes.  If you see a class that he is teaching, take it.  Paul probably has the most unique way of teaching at Neumont.  He’s one of the few teachers that really stresses the things that other teachers may tell you to worry about later, or you’ll learn in another class.  He gets more into the how things work, rather then this works, this is when you do it.   I was first worried about taking his class as the word on him was expect do a lot of papers, and I’m not a good writer.  There are numerous grammar errors you’ll find in my post to support that.  I also can’t force myself to write, if it interest me I can, if it doesn’t then I can’t.

John Finlay.  He teaches Java 2, so at some point you will have him anyway.  However you should take his other classes, I know he has taught Modern Operating Systems.  Which is a good class that teaches you about writing batch files, working with resources, and even does a little of teaching how to work with linux.  His brain child is PGV, or project GED View, an open source project in php.  He’s one of the smarter teachers at Neumont, no insult to the others.  It just seems there is such a wealth of information up there.  He has a good teaching style and does well in teaching to a group as well as doing individual 1v1 teaching if you need further explanation or want to learn a little bit more then the class normally covers.  Plus he plays WC3(or at least played).

Matt Curland.  Matt Curland is another teacher that just knows a ton about programming.  He teaches XML and is apart of NORMA.  He has a bit of a reputation for being a hard teacher, but he is a good teacher.  You’ll learn a lot from his class, and there aren’t many if any that regret taking NORMA, if your willing to put for the effort in it.

Tony Morgan.  He teaches the DB classes, so you’ll have him eventually.  He’s a great person to be able to turn to for any DB advice, so take his classes and get to know him.  He’s another teacher that knows how to teach both to a group as well as 1v1.  Plus he’s got a good sense of humor and an awesome accent ^.^

Terry Halpin.  He teaches the IM classes and his brain child is NORMA.  Another person with just a wealth of information to share and does an excellent job of teaching it.  Not to mention if you can get to know him well enough for him to be a reference for you on a resume, you will get the job, especially if it’s anything IM related.

Then 2 others, one I’m not certain how long he’ll keep teaching with his new promotion. Aaron Reed, though perhaps more known for his personality then his teaching.  He is a good teacher, he’s one of the teachers that seems to genuinely be excited about teaching what he teaches.  So far he does the gaming related classes and his heavily involved in getting our enterprise partners.  Sam Puich is another.  He hasn’t taught a class in a long time, but he is thus far my favorite teacher at Neumont.  He has the rare ability as a teacher to make you want to do well for them.  He gets you to feel like if you don’t do well, he takes it personally.  Which is a great quality to have in a teacher as it creates that extra motivation to do well.
